Removing and Replacing a Rotten Sill Plate. The sill is the piece of wood closest to the ground, either on a foundation or piers, and is usually a “timber-sized” board: 3×6, 3×8, 4×6, 4×8, and so on. The studs often rest directly on the sill and are toe-nailed in with no bottom plate as you’d find in a modern house. How to replace a rotten base plate I recently purchased (3 days ago) a new home (10 years old) but new to me. Yesterday we began the demo of the kitchen and to our surprise found rotten wood under the tile below the refrigerator.

My house is usually a 1974 split level. I ripped off the siding and observed that the sill plate is definitely rotten. The wall structure can be framed on tóp of the basis with bending up 2x4s. The initial 2x4 closest to the basis will be rotten. From whát I can inform this part of the sill would carry the weight from laminated ray that operates down the center of the house. There is definitely a place of 4 2x4s that have this insert down to the base. I had been was wanting to know what the best way to go about helping this load while replacing thé rotten 2x4.
